Additional Information
SISAL
Design Materials uses superior grade sisal from the Henequen Agave plant grown on plantations in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. This extremely strong fiber is known as the 'green gold' throughout the region. The fibers have been used in the Mayan culture for centuries as rope, fishing nets and various other textiles.
Sustainability
The production process of DMI's Color Collections is done with a very sustainable mindset. The Henequen Agave plantations do not require any type of irrigation systems as it thrives in the arid climate of the Yucatan. The plants have a long lifespan of 20-25 years during which it produces leaves continuously that are used for Sisal fiber. The Sisal fiber itself is 100% biodegradable and compostable which makes it an environmentally friendly fiber especially when compared to synthetic fibers.
